Macabre

仏像をみた。中世前期に造仏され、千年の時を経たものだ。仏としての形像を未だ保持してはいるが、像全体におよぶ腐朽や摩滅、また両肩・両足先の欠失により、素材である木があらわになっている。

ふと疑問に思う。これは、木に仏像が現れているのだろうか、それとも、仏像に木が現れているのだろうか。どちらかがどちらかを浸食しているようにもみえるし、互いにせめぎ合っているようにもみえる。いずれにしろ、仏像と木が同時に現われ、不可分になっているのである。人工と自然・作為と無作為・現象と本質・秩序と混沌・生と死が、どちらでもあり、またどちらでもなく、同時に存在しているのである。

これは、そのような体の在り方を探るものである。

Macabre

I saw a Buddha statue. It was made in the early Middle Ages of Japan and has passed a thousand years. Although it still retains its figure as a Buddha, the wood that is the material is appeared due to the decay and wear of the entire figure and the loss of both shoulders and toes. Suddenly I wonder. Is this the Buddha statue appearing on the tree, or is the tree appearing on the Buddha statue? The tree seems to be eroding the Buddha statue, or the Buddha statue seems to be eroding the tree. On the other hand, they also seem to be tense with each other to maintain their existence. In any case, the Buddha statue and the tree appear at the same time and are inseparable. Artificial and natural, phenomena and essence, order and chaos, life and death are both exist at the same time.

This is a work that explores the way such a body should be.
